The Inaugural Sustainability Fellowship Program (SFP) at Punahou Schools

15 months. 20 fellows. Countless conversations, numerous changed perspectives, and immeasurable learning surrounding the climate, energy, agriculture, and sustainability- all of which have transformed my worldviews entirely. 1 portfolio, 1 summary, aiming to capture the various life-changing experiences and learnings that I have been blessed with through this amazing program.

The SFP Summary

What is the Sustainability Fellowship Program?

Comprised of 20 high-school students from 4 schools across the State of Hawai‘i, and spanning over 15 months, the Sustainability Fellowship Program throws fellows into the heart of sustainability. From a summer (summer 2024) of intensive learning opportunities and field trips, to a year (2024-2025 SY) of individual focus research, to an internship in the field (summer 2025); all fellows ultimately cultivate their personal perspectives on, opportunities in, and passions for climate change mitigation, and are given the platform to become leaders of the world.

Section I: Reflection

1. Kuana'ike (Perspective)

Kuana’ike, the Native Hawaiian term for perspective, or point-of-view, became a term integral to the vocabulary of the fellowship; and from the beginning was a focal point of teaching and observation for the Sustainability Fellowship Program. On the very first day of the fellowship atop Pu’u O Mānoa all the way back in June of 2024, the Kumu stressed to us the importance of perspective: from the ever-changing nature of it; to how it guides our lives through connection, conversation, and action; to perhaps the most important suggestion to “Be where your feet are”. As youth with progressive visions for the state of the climate and ultimately the state of the world, we are so often focused on creating change in the future due to all the wrongs of the past, that we forget where our feet are in the present and all the people standing here with us. Through every experience in the fellowship, my outlook on specific areas of climate change mitigation have changed. Throughout the various huaka’i (field trips), so many concepts were touched upon by so many experts—sustainable energy, waste management, importation and transportation, food systems, and more—and each fellow was able to form their own perspectives on sustainability, and truly determine what our Kuana’ike were. My perspective today is one not prioritized and built on implementing system changes, engineering new technology, or passing new legislation—but one that focuses on preserving the world for society for the people of the world. Being where my feet are and striving to remember the people around me, the time I live in, and all the people that I strive to mitigate the effects of climate change for has become a driving force in my climate journey—my why—and has had me internalize the concept of sustainability through an active analysis and acknowledgement of my own perspective.

Section III:

Call to Action, Future

Ultimately, at the end of the SFP, I am left with a sense of conscientious discomfort, increasingly concerned for the future of Hawai‘i, our nation, and the world as a result of the growing crisis that is climate change. No one has ever been able to predict the future, and while I am uncomfortable, I am urged further to continue pursuing climate-positive work through policy, government, urban planning, and more. I am left with a greater sense of certainty in these uncertain times dedicating my life to this work, knowing that I am joined alongside, and forever connected with passionate, like-minded individuals who I know will dedicate their lives to mitigating the effects of climate change on our Earth, for our species, for our future as mankind, because we realize that there is no more time for blame. Sustainability is now our responsibility. Thank you, fellows, Kumu, those who are supporters, and those who are opponents, for giving us, the passionate youth, the knowledge, voices, platform, and position to lift the weight of a suffering Earth placed upon our shoulders for all the generations to follow.
